DIY Air conditioning repair checklist
There are two main approaches to troubleshooting a malfunctioning air conditioner: Do-It-Yourself (DIY) and calling a professional technician. Here’s a checklist to help you decide:
DIY Air Conditioner Repair Checklist
- Basic Checks
- Check the thermostat settings. Make sure it’s set to cool and to a temperature lower than the current room temperature.
- Inspect the air filter for clogs and replace it if dirty. Most manufacturers recommend changing the air filter every 1-3 months.
- Ensure there’s nothing blocking the supply registers (where cool air comes out) and return registers (where warm air is sucked back in).
- Electrical Checks
- Turn off the breaker that supplies power to the air conditioner unit and check if the unit is properly plugged in.
- Outdoor Unit
- Turn off the air conditioner and disconnect it from the power source.
- Remove debris like leaves, twigs, or branches from around the outdoor unit. There should be at least two feet of clearance around the unit on all sides.
- Check the drain line for clogs. The drain line is usually a PVC pipe located near the outdoor unit. You can clear a clog with a hose or wire.
If none of these DIY fixes solve the problem, then it’s time to call a professional technician.
Calling a Professional Technician
When calling a technician, be prepared to describe the problem in detail, including:
- The make and model of your air conditioner
- When the problem started
- Any error messages you’ve seen
- What troubleshooting steps you’ve already taken
This will help the technician diagnose the problem more quickly and efficiently.
